Regional Mathematics Investigation Training-Workshop 2012

The Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines—Iloilo Chapter (MTAP-IC), Inc. will hold its Second Regional Mathematics Investigation Training-Workshop on April 12-13, and 21, 2012 at the Rehearsal Hall of the West Visayas State University, Luna St., La Paz, Iloilo City.

The sought-after training-workshop has invited experts trained in University of the Philippines-Diliman and Department of Science and Technology (DOST). It is designed for high school in-service teachers in the region with a theme: “Conquering the mystery of Mathematics Investigation.” This is in recognition of the importance of math investigation as an effective and efficient teaching tool in the delivery of more in-depth, relevant, and lasting math awareness and literacy to our young mathematicians.

Specifically this activity has the following objectives:
1.    equip math teachers the necessary knowledge, mindset, experience, and skills to mentor students in doing math investigations and problem solving initiatives;
2.    build a mathematics culture among teachers (that will eventually cascade to their students) that is critical, progressive, developmental, collaborative, and analytical through math investigations;
3.    create a lasting and more personal venue for sharing effective mathematics teaching practices, materials, and methods; and
4.    update mathematics teachers with the MTAP-IC activities.

We have invited several experts, namely: Dr. Myrna Libutaque, Dr. Emellie Palomo, and Dr. Elvira Arellano, among others. The three are former DOST scholars who major in mathematics education and were trained by the UP National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (UPNISMED). Dr. Libutaque is currently teaching mathematics in the Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas while Dr. Palomo (Director of Integrated Laboratory School of WVSU) and Dr. Arellano (Associate Dean of the College of Education and Director of the Center for Research in Science and Mathematics Education of WVSU) are active mathematics professors in WVSU. They will be assisted by MI experts from the MTAP-IC leadership who will serve as mentors and facilitators in the three-day activity.

With this, a registration fee of PhP 2,000.00 shall be collected for the interested participants to cover the three-day snacks and lunch, conference materials, venue, speakers’ honoraria, and certificates. However, only 60 participants will be accommodated to join the workshop.

This activity is endorsed by the Department of Education. the memorandum will be posted here soon.
